Straying away from the rap style of West Coast rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Tyga, and YG, $tanley Vaughn is bringing a new wave of music out of California without the ‘Cali’ sound many are used to.
A Northridge, CA native, Vaughn has started his own trend of music in a city where he believes needs respiration. Now this wave isn’t for the ordinary, but if you put Chicago, New York, and California style of rap and hip-hop in one room, Vaughn’s newly dropped album ‘The Rarity’ would have been produced. With rhythmic and hardcore beats, sharp lyrics, and a twist of storytelling, it is evident that this album was truly a project tediously worked on. The intro of the album begins with ‘Hell Over Mecca’ which opens with a sample of Pusha T’s verse off the remix of Chief Keef’s ‘Don’t Like’. Laying his verse down with lyricism and metaphors, Vaughn stunts on his listeners that he isn’t an ordinary ‘California’ rapper and that this isn’t an ordinary album, nor an ordinary sound.
Throughout the album, he transitions into different sounds, samples, drops, breakdowns, and skits that give you that new age New York feel that easily resonates through your ears and speakers. With tracks like ‘Terribly Wavy”, “So Throwed” and “Codeine Connie”, this 16-track album represents Vaughn’s gutsy lyrics and storytelling that shows he can cater to all styles of ‘wavy’ rap. Now as an upcoming artist, having the ability to lay down verses that are understandable, relatable, and entertaining is vital in gaining an audience. It looks like Vaughn has caught onto what it takes relate to his listeners and with this album he can make many turn up, bob their heads, think, or simply listen. Along with his capacity to capture his fans, it shows others that this album is a project that will set him apart from many onlookers that seem to doubt his potential as a progressive rapper.
