Kawhi Leonard Goes for 39 in MVP-Like Performance, Drug Tested After Game

Monday night, Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard went for 39 points in an MVP-like performance against James Harden and the Houston Rockets. Leonard dominated the final sequence of the game, drilling a three with 26 seconds still on the clock and then blocking James Harden on the other end right after, in doing so sealing the deal for the Spurs, who won 112-110.

Minutes after the final buzzer, though, Leonard was informed that the NBA had “randomly selected” him to take a drug test. Leonard, who was suffering from dehydration, took a little longer than usual to produce the sample.

The timing of the drug test is somewhat peculiar: MVP speculation has rested primarily on Russell Westbrook and James Harden, but Leonard has recently begun to get a buzz. Last night, Leonard scored 39 points on 12 of 18 from the field, 4 of 5 from deep, and 11 of 11 from the line, with 6 bounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal.
