Brooklyn rapper Desiigner has drawn a lot of people’s attention since his GOOD Music signing and the gradual rise of his top Billboard hit, “Panda”, took off. Not long after the 18-year-old trap sensation was noticed he was appealing to the ears, and eyes, of listeners who had grown to recognize the stylings of Atlanta rapper, Future. Aside from a keen resemblance, comparisons between their music have gone beyond reference to their sound, to include seemingly in-coincidental replications of subject matter, as followers might note that Desiigner’s new song, “Pluto” bares a name that Future had already announced would be the title of his next album.
Enter So So Def CEO Jermaine Dupri, whose tweet comparing “Panda” to Future’s 2014 single, “Commas”, over the weekend, has extended talk around a possible influence over Kanye’s label-mate. “This Panda beat is the exact same beat as Commas, wow!” Dupri wrote on the evening of April 22nd. He then went on to post both videos, before tweeting a clip of him playing one record in sync with the other. Excluding some notable differences in the two instrumentals, the similar drum pattern and tempo helped the songs blend rather seamlessly. “By the way I don’t care either, I was just f–king around on the tables and herd it,don’t [shoot] me.” the producer captioned.
While similarities between DJ Spinz’ “Comma” track and Menace’s “Panda” can simply be chalked up to their sharing the same subgenre of Hip Hop, Desiigner hasn’t shunned parallels between he and his predecessor. “I actually laugh at it, there’s nothing to get upset about,” Desiigner responded on his reaction to comparisons in an interview with FADER. “I compliment the man about his creativity. I think he’s a great artist and I do what I do; I just say we’re both blessed in our ways. May god just keep it positive and keep me positive, keep me straight.”
