Athletes turned rappers don’t always pan out in the rap world. Usually rappers want to be ballers and ballers would love to be rappers,in this case we have an artist who is use to breaking barriers. A former Division 1 All American, holder of several school records,& a one time athlete of the year has put his track spikes down and picked up a mic. Not a stranger to hard work, dedication,& strong passion,he’s made the transition from athlete to rapper quite smoothly. He signed with an independent label in late 2014,but when the label failed to express any knowledge about the actual culture of hiphop and a slew of other things he decided to cut ties with the label and go at it alone. Sweezy mixes the laid back wave of the pacific coast and the aggressive wordplay of his fathers native Louisiana almost perfectly. From track to rap he’s dominated the two lanes identically, just a simple look at the artist and you wouldn’t be able to guess where he was from or what he would be rapping about. Sweezy’s introduction to the culture has been met with a few speed bumps but when you’re use to triple jumping up to 52 feet,it would take more then a few speed bumps to stop you. He released the video for his first single titled She Know It on vevo,iTunes, tidal,Apple Music,Pandora,Spotify, and other outlets.
Prior to a label situation that doesn’t need to be mentioned again,it received great reviews and currently can be viewed on vemo. Now as he expects his first child with WestCoast Rap Legend Kurupt’s daughter he digs deeper into the music while working on his debut EP. Already releasing music via soundcloud, and with a fresh new video leading the way Sweezy has a bright future. In a time where most local artists are buying YouTube views,Purchasing followers and spamming family members on Facebook–Sweezy’s wave is all authentic,no gimmicks “this is hard living mixed with crystal sippin” with the experience of opening up for artists like The Migos,ASAP Ferg,Bobby Shmurda,Rae Sremmud,Tyga, and IamSu! He’s ready to put out music and videos for more fans to see.
The music speaks for it self, the grind of waking up in the morning going to class all day, then heading to practice for a few hours, coming home and going to work just to turn around and do homework all while finding time to write and cook up verses on his own. It’s a long time coming and I think a lot of music consumers will appreciate the fresh new wave that Sweezy embodies.
Below is his first video,She Know It & his soundcloud which features a song foreshadowing the process,In the Making.
