Atlanta Interstate Fire Suspect Allegedly Smoked Crack Before Setting Blaze

Recently, a major fire erupted on Atlanta’s Interstate 85 that caused a part of the highway to collapse. Since then, suspects have been arrested which include a 39-year-old man named Basil Eleby. According to reports, he is homeless and was allegedly smoking crack before the fire started as stated on his arrest warrant. Eleby is being charged with criminal damage to property, as well as first-degree arson. The fire, started this past Thursday, caused millions of dollars in damage as well as an elongated stretch of backed up traffic that will span months as the state heads into repairs for the highway. I-85 is a heavily-used route for traffic according to the city.

Since the year 2000, Eleby has been arrested 20 times for numerous charges, which include drug trafficking and drug possession. The judge on the case for Eleby said that he considered setting a higher bond for the 39-year-old, but “in this case, that would amount to hundreds of millions of dollars.” Eleby is currently being held in Fulton County jail with a $200,000 bond.
